GE C40-8 #5203 and sisters couple to a manifest freight consist at Blackberry Mountain yard bound for Denver. This single train, now pulled by GAUX, used to be two separate trains that waited for BNSF and UP power to come up the mountain and get picked-up.

GE C40-8 #5200 switches the yard at Goodell’s Berry Farm on the shore of the Sunset Canyon River. It will be a struggle for this single loco to pull 4 loaded reefers up the 4% grade on the lead track back up to the main line. This industry has been served by the railroad since the early 1900’s.
A little about our railroad…
The GAURC is a privately owned, progressive railroad with headquarters in the fictional town of BlackBerry Mountain, Colorado. We provide freight and passenger services to several communities, and interchange with BNSF, UP and Amtrak.
GAURC commuter trains operate 7 days a week, with day and night schedules to serve an average of 1200 passengers daily.
Most passenger trains are powered by F7A locomotives at each end of former Amtrak Heritage coaches. The GAURC also hosts a seasonal Pullman coach dinner train, usually behind our AAR 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive. This line also sees one daily Amtrak train.
Our freight fleet consists of several SW7, GP38 and SD40 locomotives. We have also recently taken delivery of GE C40-8’s from CSX for use in mainline freight service.
The origin of our name...
The Underground Railroad was a network of clandestine routes and safe houses which African slaves in the 19th century United States used to escape to free states, or as far north as Canada, with the aid of abolitionists. Other routes led to Mexico or overseas. It was a loose association of people, not a system of tracks. Indeed, much of a typical flight to freedom involved many miles of walking, usually at night to avoid detection. At its height between 1810 and 1850, an estimated 30,000 to 100,000 people escaped enslavement via the Underground Railroad, though census figures only account for 6,000. The Underground Railroad has captured public imagination as a symbol of freedom, and it also figures prominently in African-American history.
